Living well with dementia

If your GP or Psychiatrist has told you that you have dementia, then NHS Health Scotland’s living well with dementia booklet (pdf) will help you understand more about your illness, how to cope with your symptoms and plan for your future. It was written with the help of people diagnosed with dementia.

There are different types of dementia. Alzheimer’s is the most common. More information on the different types of dementia and how they can affect you is on the Alzheimer’s Society website.

Dementia and sensory impairment

Being diagnosed with dementia and a sensory impairment can pose different challenges.

Information about sensory impairment support is on Aberdeenshire Council’s website.

Guides for people with dementia and sight loss are available on the RNIB website.

The British Deaf Association (BDA) Scotland are transforming the deaf dementia experience.

Minority ethnic communities

Dementia toolkits have been developed by Aberdeen Council of Voluntary Organisations (ACVO).

The professional toolkit provides practical checklists for professionals working with people from minority ethnic communities who are living with, or affected by, dementia.

The communities toolkit is designed to help families, carers and friends of people with a dementia diagnosis to access community support in English, Polish, Spanish and Russian.

Some information will be specific to people living in Aberdeen City. Your local Dementia Advisor can provide further information on support available in your local area.

Both these toolkits are available on the AVCO website.
